Effectively screens, triages and refers donor related telephone calls to the appropriate procurement, transplant or development personnel. Provides hospital personnel and all callers with prompt, efficient processing of incoming and outgoing calls. Approaches families regarding the process of donation. Obtains consent from the family for tissue donation after presenting the donation option. Allocates organs by relaying accurate and timely information to appropriate transplant centers, UNOS staff and LiveOnNY Transplant Coordinators. Donor related information is shared with the staff of the transplant center; including clinical coordinators, transplant surgeons, histocompatibility lab personnel, pathologists and organ preservationists. Supports and fosters the mission of the organization and its commitment to organ and tissue donation.
Collects hospital and patient information and pre-screening criteria on all organ, tissue and eye/cornea donor- related calls and evaluates incoming referral for donor suitability. Advises hospital staff of patient’s eligibility for donation.
Offers families the opportunity to donate.
Obtains and documents extensive medical/social history screenings on potential donors.
Coordinates the offer of suitable tissues to appropriate Tissue Banks and Recoveery personnel in accordance with established protocols.
Facilitates import organ allocation in accordance with LiveOnNY and UNOS policies. Communicates directly with on-call surgeons and/or transplant coordinators to relay pertinent information.
Coordinates preservation, transportation and support services for local and import cases to and from donor hospitals, transplant centers and laboratories.
Completes required data entry and documentation, as required, and performs quality checks on completed charts.
Maintains the highest level of Customer Service and professionalism at all times.
Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a health related field required and/or Associates degree with three years related work experience. Paramedics or Related Health care professionals desired. Previous OPO experience preferred. Sensitivity to grieving families and the ability to provide support and information to those families facing the decision to donate is required. Strong knowledge of medical terminology required. Excellent communication and customer service skills a must. 12 hour shifts available
