Overview

Responsible for the evaluation, allocation and coordination of the surgical recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation, medical research and medical education. Clinical responsibilities include evaluation of referred patients, obtaining authorization for organ donation, clinical donor management, allocation and coordination of the surgical recovery process. The In House Coordinator (IHC) will present the option of donation in a compassionate manner to newly bereaved families. Non-clinical responsibilities include analyzing the potential for donation in assigned hospitals and active participation in the hospital’s strategic plan. The IHC will implement these plans to include education, heightened awareness of donation and transplantation and maximization of subsequent donation while fostering a culture of intradepartmental collaboration and cooperation and initiating and maintaining key hospital relationships.  

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for scheduled 24- hour on call responsibility. .
  • Provide prompt and professional response to referrals from acute care facilities within the Mount Sinai Health System in a manner consistent with the LiveOnNY policies and procedures.
  • Obtain all relevant information required to make a comprehensive assessment of medical suitability for donation potential. 
  • Determine the legal next-of-kin and develops an appropriate approach strategy to ensure a compassionate, sensitive, decoupled approach when offering the opportunity of donation. Assesses the needs of the potential donor family and provides on-going information about their loved one’s condition. Counsels families to help them understand brain death and the process of organ and tissue donation thereby facilitating the consent process.
  •  Responsible for the clinical management of consented organ donors. Coordinate the surgical recovery process to include communication with all appropriate recovery teams, confirmation of the availability of hospital operating rooms, donor management, communicating with OR teams and  ensuring respect for the donor and their gifts.
  • Actively participate in post-donor activities.
  • Ensure thorough and accurate completion of the donor charts in a timely manner in accordance with LiveOnNY policies and the organizations professional standards and practice.
  • May precept new personnel in the organ/tissue donation process, approach strategies and in hospital support activities under the direction of the Clinical Services Manager.

Qualifications

NYS Licensed BSN with 3-5 years’ experience in critical care or trauma. Previous donation Transplant Coordinator preferred. Current certification in BLS, ACLS required and PALS preferred. Management experience a plus; Must possess excellent critical thinking and creative problem solving skills as well as a high level of maturity, stamina and self-motivation. Fluency in a second language is preferred.

 

This is a three-year funded pilot that is renewed annually.
