Position Summary

The Donation Coordinator plays a critical clinical leadership role in the organ and tissue donation process. This position requires travel to donor hospitals to evaluate potential donors, collaborate with healthcare teams, support donor families, and manage the organ recovery process in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.

 

This role demands strong clinical expertise, critical thinking, compassionate communication, and the ability to perform effectively in high-acuity hospital environments.

 

The primary work location is assigned donor hospital sites within LiveOnNY’s service area. Presence at hospital locations is essential and required to execute clinical and operational responsibilities, ensure regulatory compliance, preserve chain-of-custody and documentation integrity, coordinate directly with hospital clinical teams, and represent LiveOnNY in real-time decision environments.

 

Responsibilities

Clinical Evaluation & Donor Management

  • Travel promptly to assigned donor hospitals and remain accessible during scheduled shifts.
  • Evaluate potential organ donors through medical record review and physical assessment.
  • Complete donor evaluations within the electronic donor record (EDR) and report findings to leadership.
  • Collaborate with hospital physicians, transplant teams, leadership, and the Medical Director to optimize donor management and maximize organ suitability.
  • Manage organ and tissue recovery in the operating room for brain death and donation after circulatory death (DCD) cases in compliance with CMS regulations, OPTN guidance, and LiveOnNY policies.
  • Provide ongoing onsite clinical expertise from consent through organ recovery.

Family Support & Communication

  • Ensure families are offered the opportunity for organ and tissue donation in a compassionate and respectful manner.
  • Provide education and support to families so they can make informed decisions.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Serve as a liaison to transplant centers according to the UNET match run list.
  • Consult leadership and/or the Medical Director regarding medical issues or policy deviations.
  • Participate in consortiums and transplant councils as LiveOnNY’s representative when needed.
  • Provide on-the-job training and peer coaching to support staff development.

Quality & Process Improvement

  • Complete documentation and quality assurance requirements in a timely manner.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and continuous process improvement projects.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance clinical practice using research-based best practices.
  • Assist in developing policies and clinical practice guidelines in collaboration with Clinical Operations leadership and the Medical Director.

Professional Development

  • Maintain required competencies through mandatory training, annual evaluations, and continuing education.

Education & Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license preferred
  • Minimum of one-three years of hospital experience (Critical care/ICU/OR experience preferred)
  • Critical care, emergency department, or OR experience preferred
  • Minimum one to three years as a Donation Coordinator.
  • Preferred CPTC certification
  • Related licensure or equivalent clinical experience will be considered
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to donor hospitals as required.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time
  • 40-hour work week
  • Travel required to donor hospitals throughout the service area

Salary Range: $78,750 - $147,000 annually
